For Boiling
Urad sabut dal (उड़द साबुत दाल) – 1 cup
Water (पानी) – 6 cups
Salt (नमक) – to taste
Ginger, chopped (अदरक) – 1 tbsp
Garlic, chopped (लहसुन) – 1 tbsp
Heeng (हींग) – ½ tsp
Onion, chopped (प्याज़) – ½ cup
Mustard oil (सरसों तेल) – 2 tbsp
Pepper powder (काली मिर्च पाउडर) – ½ tsp
For Tadka
Ghee (घी) – 3 tbsp
Onion, chopped (प्याज़) – ½ cup
Kashmiri chilli powder (कश्मीरी मिर्ची पाउडर) – 2 tsp
Cumin powder (जीरा पाउडर) – 1 tsp
Garam masala (गर्म मसाला) – a large pinch
Kasori methi powder (कसूरी मेथी) – a large pinch
Butter/Ghee (मखन/घी) – for garnish

In a small pan for tadka, heat some ghee and sauté chopped onions until they turn golden brown. Then, add red chili powder, garam masala, kasoori methi powder, and cumin powder. Mix well and transfer this tadka to the cooked dal. Let it cook for an additional two minutes, and your Kaali Dal is ready to serve! |
