Ingredients

For Boiling 

Urad sabut dal (उड़द साबुत दाल) – 1 cup 

Water (पानी) – 6 cups

Salt (नमक) – to taste

Ginger, chopped (अदरक) – 1 tbsp

Garlic, chopped (लहसुन) – 1 tbsp

Heeng (हींग) – ½ tsp 

Onion, chopped (प्याज़) – ½ cup  

Mustard oil (सरसों तेल) – 2 tbsp

Pepper powder (काली मिर्च पाउडर) – ½ tsp 

 

For Tadka 

Ghee (घी) – 3 tbsp

Onion, chopped (प्याज़) – ½ cup  

Kashmiri chilli powder (कश्मीरी मिर्ची पाउडर) – 2 tsp

Cumin powder (जीरा पाउडर) – 1 tsp 

Garam masala (गर्म मसाला) – a large pinch 

Kasori methi powder (कसूरी मेथी) – a large pinch 

Butter/Ghee (मखन/घी) – for garnish

To prepare Kaali Dal, start by washing and soaking black moong dal overnight. In a pressure cooker, combine the soaked dal with water, salt, chopped garlic, chopped ginger, chopped onions, asafoetida, black pepper powder, and mustard oil. Pressure cook for 50 to 55 minutes.

In a small pan for tadka, heat some ghee and sauté chopped onions until they turn golden brown. Then, add red chili powder, garam masala, kasoori methi powder, and cumin powder. Mix well and transfer this tadka to the cooked dal. Let it cook for an additional two minutes, and your Kaali Dal is ready to serve!
